Az-Zumar 39:42

SAHIH
ٱللَّهُ يَتَوَفَّى ٱلْأَنفُسَ حِينَ مَوْتِهَا وَٱلَّتِى لَمْ تَمُتْ فِى مَنَامِهَا ۖ فَيُمْسِكُ ٱلَّتِى قَضَىٰ عَلَيْهَا ٱلْمَوْتَ وَيُرْسِلُ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰٓ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٍۢ مُّسَمًّى ۚ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَٰتٍۢ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ

Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during their sleep. Then He keeps those for which He has decreed death and releases the others for a specified term. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.

Allaahu yatawaffal anfusa heena mawtihaa wallatee lam tamut fee manaamihaa fa yumsikul latee qadaa 'alaihal mawta wa yursilul ukhraaa ilaaa ajalim musammaa; inna fee zaalika la Aayaatil liqawmai yatafakkarron

Tafsir Ibn Kathir — Isma'il ibn Umar Ibn Kathir

<p>إِنَّآ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْكَ الْكِتَـبَ</p><p>(Verily, We have sent down to you the Book) meaning, the Qur'an.</p><p>لِلنَّـاسِ بِالْحَق</p><p>(for mankind in truth.) means, for all of creation, mankind and Jinn, so that he may warn them therewith.</p><p>فَـمَنِ اهْتَـدَى فَلِنَفْسِهِ</p><p>(So, whosoever accepts the guidance, it is only for himself;) means, the benefit of that will return to him.</p><p>وَمَن ضَلَّ فَإِنَّمَا يَضِلُّ عَلَيْهَا</p><p>(and whosoever goes astray, he goes astray only for his (own) loss.) means, the consequences of that will return to him.</p><p>وَمَآ أَنتَ عَلَيْهِم بِوَكِيلٍ</p><p>(And you are not a trustee over them. ) means, `you are not responsible for guiding them.'</p><p>إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ نَذِيرٌ وَاللَّهُ عَلَى كُلِّ شَىْءٍ وَكِيلٌ</p><p>(But you are only a warner. And Allah is a Trustee over all things) (11:12).</p><p>فَإِنَّمَا عَلَيْكَ الْبَلَـغُ وَعَلَيْنَا الْحِسَابُ</p><p>(your duty is only to convey and on Us is the reckoning) (13:40).</p><h2>Allah is the One Who causes Death and gives Life</h2><p>Then Allah tells us that He is in control of all things and does as He wills. He causes men to die (the "greater death") when He sends the angels to take men's souls from their bodies, and He causes them to "die a lesser death" when they sleep. Allah says:</p><p>وَهُوَ الَّذِى يَتَوَفَّـكُم بِالَّيْلِ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا جَرَحْتُم بِالنَّهَارِ …

PICKTHALL

Allah receiveth (men's) souls at the time of their death, and that (soul) which dieth not (yet) in its sleep. He keepeth that (soul) for which He hath ordained death and dismisseth the rest till an appointed term. Lo! herein verily are portents for people who take thought.

YUSUF-ALI

It is Allah that takes the souls (of men) at death; and those that die not (He takes) during their sleep: those on whom He has passed the decree of death, He keeps back (from returning to life), but the rest He sends (to their bodies) for a term appointed verily in this are Signs for those who reflect.

HILALI-KHAN

It is Allah Who takes away the souls at the time of their death, and those that die not during their sleep. He keeps those (souls) for which He has ordained death and sends the rest for a term appointed. Verily, in this are signs for a people who think deeply.

ITANI

God takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that have not died during their sleep. He retains those for which He has decreed death, and He releases the others until a predetermined time. In that are signs for people who reflect.
